DESCRIPTION:In the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015\, the United Nations recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions\, including extreme poverty\, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. The Agenda also calls for a spirit of strengthened global solidarity\, focused in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. They have the potential to transform our lives and our planet by providing the framework needed for philanthropic institutions to enable all people to contribute to the betterment of our world \n  \n\n\nDonations Portal For Charitable\nOrganizations Sultanate of Oman\n \nThe Ministry of Technology and Communications (MTC) in association with the Ministry of Social Development launched the official online donations portal on the 13th January 2009 to make it possible for donors to contribute to charitable organizations completely online. \nOnline Donations Portal has been developed with the vision to promote charity for valuable social causes in the Sultanate of Oman\, by providing an electronic gateway to facilitate payment of donations to charitable organizations supported by the Ministry of Social Development such as\, Oman Charitable Organization\, Association of the welfare of the Handicapped\, Al Noor Association for the Blind\, Association of Early Intervention for Children with Special Needs\, and others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:A two-fold problem\nHealth impact: tiny\, invisible particles of pollution penetrate deep into our lungs\, bloodstream and bodies. These pollutants are responsible for about one-third of deaths from stroke\, chronic respiratory disease\, and lung cancer\, as well as one quarter of deaths from heart attack. Ground-level ozone\, produced from the interaction of many different pollutants in sunlight\, is also a cause of asthma and chronic respiratory illnesses. \nClimate impact: short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) are among those pollutants most linked with both health effects and near-term warming of the planet. They persist in the atmosphere for as little as a few days or up to a few decades\, so reducing them can have an almost immediate health and climate benefits for those living in places where levels fall. \nClean Air and Sustainable Development Goals\nIn the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development\, entitled “The future we want\,” countries committed to promoting sustainable development policies that support healthy air quality in the context of sustainable cities and human settlements. Also\, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, which outlines a road map to achieving sustainable development\, environmental protection and prosperity for all\, recognizes that air pollution abatement is important to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

SUMMARY:International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
DESCRIPTION:“As we rightly focus our energies on tackling climate change\, we must be careful not to neglect the ozone layer and stay alert to the threat posed by the illegal use of ozone-depleting gases.” \n– UN Secretary-General António Guterres \n\nThe ozone layer\, a fragile shield of gas\, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun\, thus helping preserve life on the planet. \nThe phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations\, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore\, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth. \n  \n32 Years and Healing\nThe theme for this year celebrates over three decades of remarkable international cooperation to protect the ozone layer and the climate under the Montreal Protocol. It reminds us that we must keep up the momentum to ensure healthy people and a healthy planet. \nThe Montreal Protocol has led to the phase-out of 99 per cent of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators\, air-conditioners and many other products. \nThe latest Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion completed in 2018\, shows that\, as a result\, parts of the ozone layer have recovered at a rate of 1-3% per decade since 2000. At projected rates\, Northern Hemisphere and mid-latitude ozone will heal completely by the 2030s. The Southern Hemisphere will follow in the 2050s and Polar Regions by 2060. Ozone layer protection efforts have also contributed to the fight against climate change by averting an estimated 135 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions\, from 1990 to 2010. \nOn this World Ozone Day\, we can celebrate our success. But we must all push to keep hold of these gains\, in particular by remaining vigilant and tackling any illegal sources of ozone-depleting substances as they arise. We must also wholeheartedly support the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol\, which entered into force on 1 January 2019. By phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)\, which are potent climate-warming gases\, this amendment can avoid up to 0.4°C of global temperature rise by the end of the century\, while continuing to protect the ozone layer. And by combining action to phase-down HFCs with energy efficiency improvements in the cooling industry\, we can achieve bigger climate benefits. \nLet’s keep on working and healing together!

SUMMARY:Coastal Cleanup Day
DESCRIPTION:During the third Saturday in September\, International Coastal CleanUp Day encourages people to rid beaches of the garbage plaguing beaches. Awareness is also spread about preserving and protecting the world’s oceans and waterways. \nOcean conservation groups\, along with environmental organizations\, are concerned about the amounts of trash that litter the world’s coastlines. From that concern came International Coastal Cleanup Day. It has become a global movement with 6 million volunteers across 90 countries doing their part to keep the coastlines clean. One particular organization that observes the day is Surfrider Foundation. They have numerous chapters on both the East and West coasts of the United States. Each year volunteers from Surfrider Foundation participate in cleaning up the ocean’s beaches. \nThe most common types of garbage they find on the beaches include cigarette butts\, food wrappers\, plastic straws\, plastic bottle caps\, and plastic beverage bottles. Plastics are especially harmful as they are non-biodegradable. The weather and UV Rays makes these plastics break down into tiny pieces\, which then get infiltrated into the environment. The result is a negative effect on the ecosystem. \nAccording to estimates\, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. While some of these plastics were dumped directly into the sea\, some of it was swept into the sea from the coastline. By ridding beaches of plastic and other garbage\, it lessens the likelihood of it ending up in the ocean.

The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace\, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. \nThis year\, it has been clearer than ever that we are not each other’s enemies. Rather\, our common enemy is a tireless virus that threatens our health\, security and very way of life. COVID-19 has thrown our world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact people everywhere. \nIn March\, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on all warring parties to lay down their weapons and focus on the battle against this unprecedented global pandemic. While the message is intended for armed parties\, solidarity and cooperation across borders\, sectors and generations are also needed to win this new fight against the worst public health crisis of our time. \nFor the United Nations\, 2020 was already meant to be a year of listening and learning. To mark its 75th anniversary\, the UN has invited millions of people worldwide to join UN75\, the largest and furthest-reaching global conversation on building the peaceful and prosperous future that we want. \nAs we struggle to defeat COVID-19\, your voice is more important than ever. SUMMARY:International Day of Sign Languages
DESCRIPTION:According to the World Federation of the Deaf\, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively\, they use more than 300 different sign languages. \nSign languages are fully fledged natural languages\, structurally distinct from the spoken languages. There is also an international sign language\, which is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when travelling and socializing. It is considered a pidgin form of sign language that is not as complex as natural sign languages and has a limited lexicon. \nThe Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes and promotes the use of sign languages. It makes clear that sign languages are equal in status to spoken languages and obligates states parties to facilitate the learning of sign language and promote the linguistic identity of the deaf community.

SUMMARY:World Tourism Day
DESCRIPTION:Tourism: A Key Sector in the World\nOver the past six decades\, tourism has experienced continued expansion and diversification\, and it has become one of the fastest growing and most important economic sectors in the world\, benefiting destinations and communities worldwide. International tourist arrivals worldwide have grown from 25 million in 1950 to nearly 1.3 billion today. Similarly\, international tourism revenues earned by destinations around the world have grown from 2 billion US dollars in 1950 to 1260 trillion in 2015. The sector represents an estimated 10% of the world’s GDP and 1 in 10 jobs globally. \nThe UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) expects that tourism will continue to grow at an average of 3% annually until 2030. This growth reflects the progressive expansion of access to tourism thanks to the decline in the price of transport\, especially air transport\, and growing middle classes worldwide. The recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, and the improved adoption of labour rights in many countries\, have also supported the coming of age of tourism. These factors also serve as a backdrop for the resilience shown by tourism in recent years. The sector has experienced almost uninterrupted growth despite challenges such as the global economic crisis\, natural disasters and pandemics.

SUMMARY:International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc globally\, generating significant challenges that could result in risks to food security and nutrition in many countries. Disruptions in supply chains resulting from blockages on transport routes\, transport restrictions and quarantine measures are resulting in significant increases in food loss and waste\, especially of perishable agricultural produce\, such as fruits and vegetables\, fish\, meat and dairy products. \nThe onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a shortage of seasonal migrant farm labourers and transportation labours\, who have faced difficulties in crossing borders. The closure of much of the hospitality industry and schools has also resulted in a loss of markets for producers\, making the situation even more challenging. Dealing with the levels of food waste in the upstream segments of the supply chains of perishables\, vegetables\, and milk\, in particular\, has been particularly challenging. \nThe food waste during COVID-19\, is even more concerning\, considering that food banks across the developed world are anticipating a significant increase in the demand\, owing to an increase in the number of people affected financially due to the surge in unemployment. The food banks face a number of problems ranging from a lack of experienced staff\, insufficient supply of food\, and also locations that are no longer suited to distributing food packages\, because of the physical distancing measures. \nWe need to be aware of the importance of the issue of food loss and waste now more than ever in order to promote and implement our global efforts towards resolving it. That is why\, in 2019\, the 74th United Nations General Assembly designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste\, recognizing the fundamental role that sustainable food production plays in promoting food security and nutrition. Doubtless\, this new International Day faces a lot of challenges to achieve our goals of “Responsible consumption and production\,” which will contribute to the fight for Zero Hunger and against Climate Change.

DESCRIPTION:International Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals\, which plays an important role in bringing nations together\, facilitating dialogue\, understanding and cooperation\, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. \nTransposition of a literary or scientific work\, including technical work\, from one language into another language\, professional translation\, including translation proper\, interpretation and terminology\, is indispensable to preserving clarity\, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication. \nThus\, on 24 May 2017\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace\, understanding and development\, and declared 30 September as International Translation Day.
