For the observance of International Day of Friendship\, UNICEF has released an exclusive BTS video that calls on young people to brighten someone’s day with kindness (either in real life or on the internet\, and sharing it for others to see)\, as part of UNICEF’s campaign to #ENDviolence in and around schools. \nIn December last year\, children and young people from around the world drafted an #ENDviolence Youth Manifesto  calling on governments\, teachers\, parents and each other\, to help end violence and ensure students feel safe in and around schools\, including a commitment to being kind and respectful.

A report from the global conservation organization World Wildlife Foundation suggests that since 1970\, the pressure that we exert on the planet has doubled and the resources upon which we depend have declined by 33 percent. Despite the efforts put into conservation by organizations and conservation activists\, their work has been undermined by those who have interests.

SUMMARY:World Youth Skills Day
DESCRIPTION:Why is World Youth Skills Day important?\nRising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in today’s world\, for developed and developing countries alike. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020: Technology and the future of jobs shows that since 2017\, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment\, education or training (NEET). \nIn 2016 there were 259 million young people classified as NEET – a number that rose to an estimated 267 million in 2019\, and is projected to continue climbing to around 273 million in 2021. In terms of percentage\, the trend was also slightly up from 21.7% in 2015 to 22.4% in 2020 – implying that the international target to reduce the NEET rate by 2020 will be missed. \nDesignated by the General assembly in 2014\, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people\, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions\, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship. \nWhat Role Does Technical and Vocational Education and Training Play?\nEducation and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability.

SUMMARY:International Day of Yoga
DESCRIPTION:What is Yoga and why do we celebrate it?\nYoga is an ancient physical\, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite\, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. \nToday it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. \nRecognizing its universal appeal\, on 11 December 2014\, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. \nThe International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. \nThe draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly\, in which he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body\, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself\, the world and the nature.” \nThe resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” In this regard\, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity\, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide\, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases\, such as cardiovascular diseases\, cancer and diabetes. \nBut yoga is more than a physical activity. In the words of one of its most famous practitioners\, the late B. K. S. Iyengar\, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

SUMMARY:World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
DESCRIPTION:When the soil asks for help\nDesertification is the degradation of land in arid\, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world’s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. \nThe World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nEven more specially these times\, considering the COVID-19 situation. Actions based on the clear understanding of rights\, rewards and responsibilities of land management can help address the COVID-19 fallout by tackling one of the primary environmental drivers of emerging infectious disease outbreaks. At the same time\, strengthening the resilience of our food and water systems\, can help reduce the effects of the pandemic on global poverty and food insecurity. Today\, the motto “healthy land = healthy people” promoted by the Convention to Combat Desertification\, is more true than ever.

DESCRIPTION:Background\nDuring the 1980’s\, the United Nations began focusing attention on issues related to the family. In 1983\, based on the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council\, the Commission for Social Development in its resolution on the Role of the family in the development process (1983/23) requested the Secretary-General to enhance awareness among decision makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family\, as well as of effective ways of meeting those needs. \nIn its resolution 1985/29 of 29 May 1985\, the Council invited the General Assembly to consider the possibility of including in the provisional agenda of its forty-first session an item entitled “Families in the development process”\, with a view to consider a request to the Secretary-General to initiate a process of development of global awareness of the issues involved\, directed towards Governments\, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and public opinion. \nLater\, based on the recommendations of the Commission for Social Development\, formulated in its 30th round of sessions\, The Assembly invited all States to make their views known concerning the possible proclamation of an international year of the family and to offer their comments and proposals. \nIn 1993\, the General Assembly decided in a resolution (A/RES/47/237) that 15 May of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families. This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social\, economic and demographic processes affecting families. \nOn 25 September 2015\, the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals\, a set of 17 goals aiming to eliminate poverty\, discrimination\, abuse and preventable deaths\, address environmental destruction\, and usher in an era of development for all people\, everywhere. Families and family-oriented policies and programmes are vital for the achievement of many of these goals. \nCould families be the key to achieving the SDGs?\nFamily policies are a mainstay of national public policies\, and the most meaningful vehicle for governments to influence the living standards of upcoming generations. As part of achieving the global ambitions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, family policies play an important part in meeting targets across many of the goals.

DESCRIPTION:Background\nIn 2003\, the International Labour Organization (ILO)\, began to observe World Day in order to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work\, capitalizing on the ILO’s traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue. \nThis celebration is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO\, as documented in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003. One of the main pillars of the Global Strategy is advocacy\, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a significant tool to raise awareness of how to make work safe and healthy and of the need to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health. \n28 April is also the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers organized worldwide by the trade union movement since 1996.

Culture is an essential component of sustainable development and represents a source of identity\, innovation and creativity for the individual and community. At the same time\, creativity and culture have a significant non-monetary value that contributes to inclusive social development\, to dialogue and understanding between peoples.

The focus will be on equity and solidarity – on raising the bar for health for everyone\, everywhere by addressing gaps in services\, and leaving no one behind. \n  \nWhy universal health coverage and primary health care?\nUniversal health coverage means that all people have access to the quality health services they need\, when and where they need them\, without financial hardship. We believe this is possible and it starts with strong primary health care. Primary health care is a whole-of-society approach to health and wellbeing centred on the needs and preferences of individuals\, families and communities. \nUniversal health coverage is the World Health Organization’s (WHO) number one goal. Key to achieving it is ensuring that everyone can obtain the care they need\, when they need it\, right in the heart of the community. \nProgress is being made in countries in all regions of the world. \nBut millions of people still have no access at all to health care. Millions more are forced to choose between health care and other daily expenses such as food\, clothing and even a home. \nThis is why WHO is focusing on universal health coverage for this year’s World Health Day\, on 7 April.

DESCRIPTION:On World Autism Awareness Day\, we recognize and celebrate the rights of persons with autism. \nPersons with autism have the right to self-determination\, independence and autonomy\, as well as the right to education and employment on an equal basis with others. \nUniversal human rights\, including the rights of persons with disabilities\, must not be infringed upon in the time of a pandemic. Governments have a responsibility to ensure that their response includes persons with autism. Persons with autism should never face discrimination when seeking medical care. This aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 1\, 12\, 14 and 15\, and their wide-ranging commitments on alleviating poverty\, ensuring sustainable use of resources\, and on conserving life both on land and below water to halt biodiversity loss. \nEarth is home to countless species of fauna and flora – too many to even attempt counting. Historically\, we have depended on the constant interplay and interlinkages between all elements of the biosphere for all our needs: the air we breathe\, the food we eat\, the energy we use\, and the materials we need for all purposes. However\, unsustainable human activities and overexploitation of the species and natural resources are imperiling the world’s biodiversity. Nearly a quarter of all species are presently at risk of going extinct in the coming decades.

DESCRIPTION:Safeguarding Linguistic Diversity\nLanguages\, with their complex implications for identity\, communication\, social integration\, education and development\, are of strategic importance for people and planet. Yet\, due to globalization processes\, they are increasingly under threat\, or disappearing altogether. When languages fade\, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities\, traditions\, memory\, unique modes of thinking and expression — valuable resources for ensuring a better future — are also lost. \nAt least 43% of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain\, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world. \nInternational Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. \nLanguages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding\, tolerance and dialogue. \nEvery two weeks a language disappears taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. \nLinguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. Globally 40 per cent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless\, progress is being made in mother tongue-based multilingual education with growing understanding of its importance\, particularly in early schooling\, and more commitment to its development in public life. \nMultilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way. \nBackground\nInternational Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62). The UN General Assembly welcomed the proclamation of the day in its resolution A/RES/56/262 of 2002. \nOn 16 May 2007 the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/61/266 called upon Member States “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world”. By the same resolution\, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages\, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding\, through multilingualism and multiculturalism and named the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization to serve as the lead agency for the Year. \nThis initiative not only increased awareness of language issues\, but also mobilized partners and resources for supporting the implementation of strategies and policies in favour of language diversity and multilingualism in all parts of the world \nThe International Year of Languages came at a time when linguistic diversity was increasingly threatened. Language is fundamental to communication of all kinds\, and it is communication that makes change and development possible in human society. Using — or not using — certain languages today can open a door\, or close it\, for large segments of society in many parts of the world. \nToday there is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development\, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue\, but also in strengthening co-operation and attaining quality education for all\, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage\, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development.

At the global level\, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity\, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out\, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities\, offering a wide variety of programs\, viewpoints and content\, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations. \nRadio is a low-cost medium specifically suited to reaching remote communities and vulnerable people\, offering a platform to intervene in the public debate\, irrespective of people’s educational level. It also plays a crucial role in emergency communication and disaster relief. \nRadio is uniquely positioned to bring communities together and foster positive dialogue for change. By listening to its audiences and responding to their needs\, radio services provide the diversity of views and voices needed to address the challenges we all face. \nOrigin\nUNESCO’s Executive Board recommended to the General Conference the proclamation of World Radio Day\, on the basis of a wide consultation process\, carried out by UNESCO in 2011\, further to a proposal from Spain. The leader of the project\, the Academia Española de la Radio\, received support for the proposal from diverse stakeholders\, including major international broadcasters and broadcasting unions and associations. \nThe date of 13 February\, the day United Nations Radio was established in 1946\, was proposed by the Director-General of UNESCO. \nUNESCO’s General Conference\, at its 36th session\, proclaimed 13 February as World Radio Day. \nOn 14 January 2013\, the United Nations General Assembly formally endorsed UNESCO’s proclamation of  World Radio Day. During its 67th Session\, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 13 February as World Radio Day. \nPurpose\nThe objectives of the Day are to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio; to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio; as well as to enhance networking and international cooperation among broadcasters.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science\, let’s pledge to end the gender imbalance in science. \nUN Secretary-General António Guterres\n\n\nScience and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

DESCRIPTION:Why are pulses important crops?\nNutritional value\nThey are packed with nutrients and have a high protein content\, making them an ideal source of protein particularly in regions where meat and dairy are not physically or economically accessible. Pulses are low in fat and rich in soluble fiber\, which can lower cholesterol and help in the control of blood sugar. Because of these qualities they are recommended by health organizations for the management of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart conditions. Pulses have also been shown to help combat obesity. \nFood security\nFor farmers\, pulses are an important crop because they can both sell them and consume them\, which helps farmers maintain household food security and creates economic stability. \nEnvironmental benefits\nThe nitrogen-fixing properties of pulses improve soil fertility\, which increases and extends the productivity of the farmland. By using pulses for intercropping and cover crops\, farmers can also promote farm biodiversity and soil biodiversity\, while keeping harmful pests and diseases at bay. \nFurthermore\, pulses can contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing dependence on the synthetic fertilizers used to introduce nitrogen artificially into the soil. Greenhouse gases are released during the manufacturing and application of these fertilizers\, and their overuse can be detrimental to the environment. \nOrigin\nRecognizing their value\, on 20 December 2013\, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/68/231) proclaiming 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (IYP). The celebration of the year\, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, increased the public awareness of the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production. \nBuilding on the success of the International Year of Pulses and recognizing their potential to further achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, with particular relevance to Sustainable Development Goals 1\, 2\, 3\, 5\, 8\, 12\, 13 and 15\, Burkina Faso proposed the observance of World Pulses Day. \nIn 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 10 February as the World Pulses Day (resolution A/RES/73/251).
